The parts of the brain responsible for storing and recollecting emotional memories include the hippocampus, amygdala and regions of the prefrontal cortex. Negative memories usually involve elements of fear and stress which send hormones that strongly activate the amygdala which then strengthens the storage of this memory in the hippocampus.
Scientists say the easy recollection of negative events makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint to help us avoid future negative threats. However, we shouldn’t assume that we only store these bad memories. Memories involving overwhelming positive emotions are also easy to recall! It is a matter of perspective.
You can reframe past negative memories with the appropriate magnitude and highlight positive memories as you integrate your life story in therapy.
One scary chapter doesn’t define your whole life story.
